01Context

The Maastrichtian aquifer is a major strategic resource for drinking water supply in Senegal.

SONES wished to assess the potential of this aquifer along the Khombole–Diourbel axis, with a view to securing water supply in the area.

02Challenges

Mobilizing a deep resource requires precise knowledge of its geometry, productivity and quality.

The challenge was to enhance investment decision-making by reducing hydrogeological uncertainties.

03Mission objectives

  • Characterize the Maastrichtian aquifer along the studied axis
  • Assess its abstraction potential
  • Identify the most favorable sectors
  • Guide water abstraction projects

04Services delivered by EAU-GEF

  • Synthesis of geological and hydrogeological data
  • Targeted geophysical surveys
  • Interpretation and mapping of potential
  • Recommendations for facility siting
  • Synthesis report

05Approach & methodology

The approach combined desk review, geophysics and hydrogeological interpretation to refine the aquifer's potential.

Results were spatially analyzed to prioritize sectors favorable for abstraction.

06Results & added value

The study provided SONES with a documented assessment of the Maastrichtian aquifer potential along the Khombole–Diourbel axis.

It demonstrates EAU-GEF's expertise in characterizing strategic deep aquifers.
